Fly me to the Stars

This photo is the last picture I took the other evening while at the Paint Mines. It's cropped a lot to get the moon this big. It's also a bit fuzzy - there was a bit of a moon dog that night. I actually quite amazed at how well it turned out. I'd love to have access to a large telescope and take some big photos of the moon, photos of the planets (Jupiter and Mars), galaxies, nebulae, etc.

Be sure to point your browser over to Skywatch Friday.

Writing the phrase "Jupiter and Mars" set off the association with Sinatra's 'Fly me to the Moon':

Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On a-Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me

Now its running endlessly through my head.

And my toes...

That Sinatra song is addicting for me as well. it is always nice to see the moon this way. It's never boring. The craters are really distinct.

Funny, I don't think this is fuzzy at all. I think it's magnificent!! It looks to me as great as any shot I'd see on a NASA website or something. Awesome!!

And not a cyclist in sight! ;-)

Fantastic photo, Russ.

There is an observatory in town and I remember last time I went there, there were a few bods out there with big lenses all hooked up to laptops and stuff. It was amazing what they could see and show on their screens. It was more interesting then the actual observatory!

I wish I could photograph the moon this pretty. Maybe the first thing is to buy a good camera eh. Anyway, you are a gifted photog.

I'm guessing you shot this at the upper extreme of your longer lens. Do you happen to remember the shutter speed you used? I've never really gotten a good shot of the moon at 200mm.

Thanks everyone!

Bryan - the spec of the shot are:
1/320s
f/5.0
ISO 100

I used a tripod. For some shots I turned on the image stabilization even with the tripod. This shot is one of those.

I would have like to use a f-stop closer the center of the range, but I wanted a fast shot. But, should've tried it.
