Calibration

What color is this photo? On my home system, it is a nice Sepia toned image. At work, its a bit of a sickly radioactive green color... Hopefully the monitor at home is the correctly calibrated monitor! Perhaps its time to get the necessary hardware to properly calibrate my monitor.

In other news, I'll be out in the sticks in and around Glacier National Park all next week. So, I will not be able to post anything next week (I can almost hear the wife cheering). But, hopefully, once I return, I'll have lots of new photos. Have a great week everyone!

Past and Present

While in Cripple Creek, CO this weekend, I found that I walked into the middle of a war zone. Ok, a re-enactment of one. Cripple Creek honors the United States Armed Forces with their military appreciation weekend, during which there were a number of WWII battle re-enactments. This photos shows spectators and actors between battles.

The historic Delaware Hotel in Leadville, CO has a number of these ladies scattered around the lobby.  This would make a rather interesting side table that would start a few conversations...

Is that a camera in your pocket?

One of the first things we did during our recent vacation was to take my parents to the Mollie Kathleen mine near Cripple Creek, Co for a tour. You can ride down a very packed elevator car down 1000 feet (305 meters) and have a guided tour through the mines. And I do mean packed. We had 6 people crammed into this tiny elevator. Luckily I knew three of the people already. The other two, I soon became acquainted with during the two minute descent.

It was really an interesting tour. I found the demonstrations of the machinery really interesting. They also played a recording of how the blasting would sound in the mine. Very spooky. I've been on a number of mine tours, and this was by far the best.

Even through I drive by it fairly often, I have never before stopped at the Mollie Kathleen. It's funny how one ignores local attractions until visitors arrive.

This photo is an old truck left in the mines lot. According to the paint on the door, it once belonged to the Woodland Garage of Woodland Park, CO.

The View

Today's photo is a continuation of yesterday's series. This is the view from the Devil's Head Fire Lookout towards the south at Pikes Peak. Sure looks small from this distance.

Barn

We're back! We had a great time in Crested Butte. It is a very beautiful place! There is a lot of ranch land in the valleys, surrounded by gorgeous mountains. Sadly, we only got a few glimpses of the mountains due to the clouds and rain.

Here's a shot of a barn seen along the Kebler pass road. We tried to get to Irwin lake, however, the final few miles to the lake were still covered in deep snow. At the top of this image, you can see the beginnings of the low layer of clouds.

I'll be posting a few other images from this trip during the next few weeks.

A Place to Hang my Hat

Hat and gear hanging at Bent's Old Fort National Historic site near La Junta, Co. This is from the collection of photo's I took when I visited there about a month ago.

I'm using some older photos in the blog because I don't have a lot of new ones. For the last month, I've been doing a lot of experimenting and don't have a lot of new photos worthy of sharing. I've been playing with candids, portraits, learning how to use a flash, different techniques, and unusual (for me) subjects. It's been a lot of fun, and I'm learning a lot.

I'm looking forward to the Memorial Day weekend here in the US. We'll be heading up into the mountains for the long weekend of hiking, photography and relaxation.

Arrested Decay

Here's another image from the ghost town of Bodie, California. This is the backside of the Boone Store and Warehouse. It still shelves many items. Including, according to the bodie.com site, several original Edison light bulbs that are and have been continuously burning for several years.

Bodie is a very interesting place to visit. If you ever find yourself in the eastern sierras, it would be well worth your time to stop at Bodie.
